Hayashi, Tanaka triumph

Advertiser Staff

Mauna Kea pro Kevin Hayashi shot a 5-under-par 67 in the wet and windy final round of the Aloha Section PGA's Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship yesterday to win by one shot with amateur partner Elton Tanaka.

Hayashi and Tanaka have won two of the last three Pro-Scratch tournaments. The $10,000 event is 5 years old.

They led after Monday's first round, shooting 61 in the scramble format at Pearl Country Club. Yesterday's 67, in a best-ball format, was just enough to hold off Chad Saladin and amateur partner Charles Holland, who closed with 64 in what Tanaka called "ugly" conditions.

"The key to this tournament is you need to shoot good the first day," Hayashi said. "You have to be close after the scramble because it's hard to catch up in best-ball."

Tanaka did not completely agree. "The key is Kevin Hayashi," he said. "I was a contributing factor on scramble day. He is the man on best-ball day."

Saladin will defend his Hawai'i Prince Resort's State Open championship later this month at Mauna Kea. Hayashi leads the Aloha Section's Player of the Year race going into that event.

Brothers Norman-Ganin and Kellen-Floyd Asao (63-67) were another shot back in third. Defending champions Jeff Ferry and Bryan Edwards (64-68) tied for fourth with Oahu Country Club's Andrew Feldmann and Eric Sonnenberg (63-69).
