A two-car accident on the H-2 Freeway near the Kipapa Gulch Bridge yesterday set off a chain reaction of collisions that closed a section of the freeway for more than four hours, police said.
Many Central O'ahu motorists who took alternate routes ended up sitting in gridlock for hours.
The driver of one of the cars in the original crash told police she lost control of her car after a woman in another car shot at her.
Police found no evidence of a shooting, such as bullet holes or shell casings, but opened an attempted-murder investigation.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m. yesterday, the woman who reported she was shot at lost control of her sedan and collided with a sport utility vehicle in the townbound lanes. The 25-year-old from the Wahiawa area was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. Police said she was in stable condition.
The 38-year-old female driver of the SUV was taken to Pali Momi Medical Center. Two children in her SUV were not hurt.
Police traffic investigators shut down H-2 Freeway in the townbound direction to gather evidence, police said.
Meanwhile, drivers traveling north on H-2 began to rubberneck, police said. Soon, three other minor car collisions resulted from the rubbernecking, police said, and the H-2 freeway in the opposite direction also was closed.
