Hilo women fall in playoff

Chico State beat host Hawai'i-Hilo in a playoff to win the women's title and Cal State Stanislaus captured the men's crown by six strokes at the Mauna Lani Intercollegiate yesterday at the Mauna Lani Resort golf course.
Chico State made three pars and one bogey on the second playoff hole to beat Hilo after both teams shot 631 for two rounds.
Notre Dame de Namur (724) placed third in the three-team field.
Chico State's Katie Leong (76—151) edged Hilo's Jayna Shimomura (75—152) for medallist honors.
CSU-Stanislaus shot 283—861 to beat runner-up Sonoma State (289—867) in the men's competition. Hilo (293—879) tied for third with Western Washington (291—879) in the nine-team field.
Western Washington's Tim Feenstra shot 70—210 to edge CSU-Stanislaus' Ryan Thornberry (68—211) for medallist honors. Colin Gilliam was Hilo's top finisher, shooting 70—213 for fifth.
USC LEADS BY NINE
Southern California shot 294-294—588 to take a nine-stroke lead over Stanford yesterday in the Kent Youel Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course.
Host Hawai'i shot 313-321—634 to tie for 14th entering today's final round of the 18-team event.
Stanford's Kelly Husted shot 69-72—141 to take a four-stroke lead over Baylor's Josefin Svenningsson. The Rainbow Wahine were led by Dale Gammie and Xyra Suyetsugu, who both shot 78-79—157 to tie for 41st.
