The discovery of a mortar round near Kapa'a Quarry Road prompted police to close the road for about 2 1/2 hours yesterday.
Construction workers erecting a concrete barrier dug up the round with an excavating machine about 2:45 p.m., police said.
Patrol officers closed both entrances to the road, near Kalaheo High School and at Le Jardin Academy, at 2:45 p.m.
Officers from the police bomb squad and Specialized Services Division responded. Department of Defense officials and Army ordinance specialists arrived just before 4 p.m. and removed the round, police said.
The road was reopened at 5:15 p.m., police said.
The round will be tested to see if it is live.
