TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"The Kennedy Center Honors," 8 p.m., CBS. Like the people it honors, this show offers the best of American performing arts. It has warm (and sometimes funny) remarks, short biographies and stunning music. You'll have to wait for some of it. Barring a change, this show concludes with its best moments. That's in a powerhouse tribute to Tina Turner with Queen Latifah, Melissa Etheridge, Beyoncé and Al Green. It brings wave after wave of show-stopping moments. Earlier, there's more great music. Catch Willie Nelson's song for Robert Redford, "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys." Catch Wynton Marsalis' instrumental "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." That's part of a Tony Bennett tribute that includes Diana Krall, John Legend and k.d. lang's wondrous "Wonderful World." There is also lots of talking here, but it's great talk about gifted people. Tom Brokaw and Paul Newman draw laughs in their tribute to Redford, who Glenn Close calls "a dreamer and a CEO." Also honored are dancer Suzanne Farrell and actress Julie Harris. It's a splendid evening.

OF NOTE

"Punch-Drunk Love" (2002), 6 p.m., FX. After his brilliantly bizarre "Magnolia," director-writer Paul Thomas Anderson came up with this surprisingly muted film. There are occasional great moments between Adam Sandler and Emily Watson, as two lonely and likable souls. There are also a lot of odd, in-between moments. A good portion of the movie was filmed in Waikiki.

"Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," 6, 7 and 9 p.m., Bravo. First, the team helps two New York Jets fans get engaged, via a proposal on the 50-yard line. Then comes a rerun of the two-part season-opener, trying to re-link a couple that broke up after 10 years without a proposal.
