A man accused of threatening to kill a baby and charging toward the cockpit of a Northwest Airlines flight on Dec. 9 has been indicted by a federal grand jury.

Santiago Lol Tizol, 37, was indicted Tuesday on one count of interfering with the airliner's flight crew. If convicted, he would be subject to a potential sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Tizol is in custody at the federal detention center at the airport. Tizol, a Guatemalan national who has a brother on the Big Island, was denied supervised release Monday.

FBI agents arrested Tizol soon after Northwest Flight 91 from Los Angeles arrived at Honolulu International Airport at 6:46 p.m. on Dec. 9.

Several passengers and crew members heard Tizol say he was going to kill the baby of a Canadian couple aboard the plane, according a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court. They said he was holding a cell phone cord "in a threatening matter."

Tizol refused a flight's attendant's request to move to the back of the plane, the affidavit said. The attendant moved the Canadian couple and their baby to the back for their safety.

Tizol allegedly rushed the cockpit. Four male passengers subdued him and he was restrained with plastic handcuffs.
