Scott Rigg, who guided the Punahou School girls volleyball team to state championships in 2003 and 2004, has resigned as the Buffanblu's head coach, athletic director Tom Holden announced yesterday.

Holden said Rigg expressed a desire to travel to Florida sometime next fall to watch his daughter Spenser play volleyball for Barry (Miami Shores, Fla.) University. Rigg will remain as a sixth-grade teacher at Punahou.

After coaching the Buffanblu boys to state championships in 1992, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, Rigg took over the girls program in 2003 and proceeded to guide Punahou to a 48-match win streak in the regular season and state tournaments.

The Buffanblu won two Interscholastic League of Hono-lulu titles in that span, and Rigg was named The Advertiser's State Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004.

The 48-match win streak ended midway through this past season.

"Scott has always been a student of the game and is very well-respected by his players, parents and colleagues," Holden said. "It will be difficult to replace his passion for coaching volleyball and his masterful ability to make on-court adjustments during key matches."

Holden said the application process for the head coaching position has not begun.
