POLICE BEAT
Probe launched over broken arm

Advertiser Staff

Military police yesterday opened a second-degree assault case after a 20-month-old boy was taken to Tripler Army Medical Center with a fractured arm.

Police said the boy was brought to the hospital by his parents and X-rays showed that he had a fractured left forearm. A doctor reported the injury to police after it was determined that the injury was seven to 10 days old.

The parents told police that they did not know how the boy was injured. The case was turned over to military police. No arrests were made as of last night.

MAN KILLED IN H-3 MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A 51-year-old man was killed yesterday when he lost control of his motorcycle and it hit a guardrail on the H-3 Freeway near Hospital Rock in Kane'ohe.

Police said the Honolulu man was riding his 1994 Harley-Davidson in the Halawa direction when he struck a guardrail about 3:15 p.m. The man was thrown from the motorcycle, slid on the top of the guardrail and slammed into the tunnel wall abutment, police said.

The man suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

Police said the motorcycle continued through the tunnel, crashed into a jersey barrier and wound up about 500 feet from where it hit the guardrail. Police said traffic was light at the time and no one else was injured.

Yesterday's fatality was the 74th traffic death on O'ahu this year.
