'Plantation Days' returning Jan. 7

Advertiser Staff

"Relive the Plantation Days," one of Hawaii's Plantation Village's most popular events, returns on the first Saturday of each month starting Jan. 7. Each program is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The programs will feature activities and demonstrations of a different ethnic heritage group each month.

The Puerto Rican community will be featured in January. Demonstrations include pasteles making by Ramona Caraballo. During the plantation era, pasteles were considered a "special occasion" food, prepared and enjoyed especially at Christmas, Three Kings Day and Easter.

Also scheduled is a demonstration by John Colon on how to play the traditional game of horseshoes.

Hawaii's Plantation Village also will present a narcissus bulb-carving demonstration and workshop in January for the Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated Jan. 29.

Korean and Portuguese heritages will be featured in February and March, respectively.
