A team from Hawai'i won 10 gold medals and the team title at the Amateur Athletic Union World Bench, Deadlift and Push/Pull Championships in Laughlin, Nev.

The Hawai'i team competed against two U.S. teams and teams from Canada, Turkmenistan, Finland, Mexico, Ireland and Ukraine, Dec. 2 to 4. The team title was a first for Hawai'i in the event.

Hawai'i athletes setting world records in the bench press were: Doug Ortiz, raw open division, 132 pounds weight class; Ata Edralin, sub master, 148; Bruce Young, raw master 40-44, 220; Dean Yamada, masters 45-49, 242; Wayne Kaaloa, masters 45-49, 308; Greg Payne, open, 308 and Lyle Kamaka, masters 45-49, 320.

Setting records in the deadlift were Edralin, sub master, 148; Eric Shimomi, masters 45-49, 242 and Payne, open, 308.

FISHING

HALL OF FAME HONORS KONA'S GEORGE PARKER

George Parker, of Kailua, Kona, was one of five men inducted into the International Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame last Sunday in Dania Beach, Fla.

Parker, 94, attended the ceremony with five family members.

"It was such an honor," Parker said. "I was floored."

Parker is credited with catching Hawai'i's first blue marlin over 1,000 pounds (1,002) in 1954. He said the strike came in waters off Koko Head and the marlin was boated off Waikiki Beach. He also is one of the first captains to charter regularly out of Kona.

A total of 60 are enshrined at the International Game Fish and Hall of Fame and Museum. The museum is also online at www.igfa.org.

KONA'S CHANG PLACES THIRD IN WORLD CUP

David Chang of Kailua, Kona, won a bronze medal in the Youth A (to age 17) men's division of the singles luge World Cup race at Lillehammer, Norway, on Dec. 2.

Chang, 16, competing in his first international race, finished two runs for a total of 1 minute, 41.457 seconds. Italy's Daniel Hoellrigl won in 1:39.666 and USA Luge's Addison Dailey was second in 1:40.823.
