Mililani ninth-grader wins chess crown

Ninth-grader Robert Lau of Mililani Mauka has won his second national title at the 2005 K-12/Collegiate Chess Tournament in Houston, Texas.
The homeschooled 14-year-old tied for first place in his grade level, sharing the Ninth Grade National Chess Champion trophy with Troy Daly of Florida.
Lau won the sixth-grade championship three years ago.
Kamehameha fifth-grader Tristan Kaonohi, Hawai'i's only other competitor, tied for 14th place out of 162 in the Fifth Grade Nationals.
HAWAI'I COMPANY OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS
Students at high schools near Hawai'i Self Storage sites can apply for $1,000 scholarships through Feb. 15.
The scholarships are renewable annually for up to $4,000.
Hawai'i Self Storage has sites in Salt Lake and Pearl City, and a new one is being built in Kaimuki.
Seniors graduating from Kapolei, Radford, Waipahu, Moanalua, 'Aiea, Farrington, Pearl City, Kaimuki and Mililani high schools are eligible to apply.

CHAMINADE GETS $1 MILLION PLEDGE
Chaminade University has received a $1 million pledge from John and Mary Lou Brogan to help finance an education building.
John Brogan is a Chaminade regent who chairs the university capital campaign.
The Brogans focused their support on promoting partnerships between the Diocese of Honolulu and Chaminade, and the development of high-quality facilities for Chaminade.
