Iolani hoops win streak ends at 104

Advertiser Staff

After four years and 104 games, the Iolani School boys basketball team finally lost to a Hawai'i opponent last night.

Punahou rallied past the Raiders, 67-56, to win the Seventh Annual James Alegre Invitational championship at Radford. The last time four-time defending state champ Iolani lost to a Hawai'i opponent was Dec. 8, 2001, also in the finals of the Alegre Invitational.

Kalaheo won that game, 68-60. Until last night, the Raiders' only losses since then were to Fairfax (Los Angeles) twice, Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.), Fairley (Memphis, Tenn.), Rice (New York) and Roman Catholic (Philadelphia) in the Iolani Prep Classic, plus a five-overtime loss at a Boston tournament in 2002.

Five of those seven losses came to teams that were ranked in the nation's Top 25.

"That just shows how great, how consistent Iolani's been all these years," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said.

The Raiders led 36-24 at halftime and 48-45 after three quarters last night. But the Buffanblu tied it with about five minutes remaining and took the lead with three minutes left.

Punahou's Miah Ostrowski led all scorers with 17 points and Danny Cho added 13, including four 3-pointers. Vinny Nip led Iolani with 14 points.
