Managing time can keep you fit during holidays

Time management may be the biggest barrier that keeps us from exercising during the holiday season. Many fitness experts suggest that we make exercise a priority, and that we schedule a time for it. This may be a challenge if we don't manage our time well. Here is an exercise to help us transform time into a valuable resource during the holiday season.

Step 1: Write out your daily schedule. Schedule blocks of time such as from 7 to 8 a.m., noon to 12:30 p.m. and 4 to 4:15 p.m.

Step 2: Record what you plan on doing during those periods. For example: work, meetings, shopping, chores, eating, family time, gym, bath, TV.

Step 3: Record how you will use any free time that appears on your schedule. This might be a good place to schedule some exercise if it doesn't appear in Step 2.

Doing this exercise will allow you to have some control over your time. If exercise doesn't appear in your schedule, consider these options:

  • Schedule exercise in the morning before the day gets too busy.

  • Schedule quick bursts of activity, such as a 10-minute power walk through the mall or a 5-minute strength routine at home.

  • Schedule exercise as time for yourself.

  • Schedule a backup plan if you can't make it to the gym.
