Hole No. 14, 70 yards, pitching wedge
It took 33 years, but the John A. Burns Challenge Cup last week finally had its first hole-in-one when Alvin Okada, a June graduate of Wai'anae High School who won the 2004 OIA boys title, aced the par-3 14th hole at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Playing for the amateur team against the pros, Okada used a pitching wedge at the 14th hole, which was shortened from its usual length of 189 yards to 70 yards because of a mud-soaked teeing area.
"It was from a temporary tee but I'll take it," Okada said of his first hole-in-one.
