McLachlin 1 shot short at PGA

Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin shot a 3-under-par 69 on the sixth and final day of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament, missing the cut for a tour card by one stroke in Winter Garden, Fla.

McLachlin, who finished tied for 33rd at 422, earned full status on the Nationwide Tour next year.

McLachlin, a 26-year-old Punahou School alum, lives in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The top 30 golfers and ties received exemptions to the PGA Tour. Six golfers tied for 26th at 421. The next 46 players earned Nationwide cards.

John B. Holmes shot a final-round 69 and finished at 408 to capture medalist honors.

Alex Cejka (68) was second at 411.

Former Hawai'i resident Keoke Cotner finished tied for 138th after a 77-439.


VOLLEYBALL

RAINBOW WAHINE MOVE UP TO NO. 6 IN TOP 25

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team moved up a spot to No. 6 yesterday in the College Sports Television/American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches Top 25.

Nebraska (30-1) remained No. 1, followed by Penn State (31-2), Washington (28-1), Florida (32-2) and Arizona (24-5). The Cornhuskers received 46 of the 60 first-place votes. Penn State received nine first-place votes and Washington five.

The Rainbow Wahine (27-6) play No. 8 Missouri (22-4) in the Round of 16 at the State College (Pa.) Regional on Friday. The match will be telecast live at 11 a.m. Hawai'i time on K5. Host Penn State and No. 17 Tennessee (23-8) also are in the regional.

Hawai'i defeated Texas State and host Texas in first- and second-round matches at Austin last weekend.


SWIMMING

SCHLANGER SELECTED WAC ATHLETE OF WEEK

University of Hawai'i's Melanie Schlanger was named Western Athletic Conference women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

Schlanger a sophomore from Buderim, Queensland, Australia, won the 100-meter freestyle and tied for first in the 50 freestyle at the Texas Invitational. She also placed second in the 200 freestyle.

All three were NCAA automatic qualifying marks.

She also set UH records in the 100 and 200 freestyle.


BASEBALL

FRATICELLI TO TAKE OVER VARSITY AT SAINT LOUIS

Former Kalaheo High coach Duane Fraticelli has been named varsity baseball coach at Saint Louis School.

Fraticelli coached Kalaheo to a second-place finish in the state in 1994, and also was a pitching coach at Kailua High.

Fraticelli replaces Scot Paiva, who was dismissed by Saint Louis after two seasons.

Saint Louis finished third in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with a 14-7 record last season.

CORREA NAMED VARSITY COACH AT KS-HAWAI'I

Andy Correa has been named head coach of Kamehameha Schools-Hawai'i's varsity baseball team.

Correa served as an assistant coach at Hilo High from 1990 to 1995 and at Waiakea High since 1996.

Kamehameha-Hawai'i will be entering its third season of varsity baseball this spring.

Correa replaces Tony DeSa.
