The ARTS at Marks Garage holiday gift gallery, called Elves Can't Make This Stuff, open Tuesdays through Saturdays until Dec. 22, promises an oddball flow of new, alternative gifts for the friend on your shopping list who hates anything mass produced or sporting a Gap or Martha Stewart label. The selection includes funky items produced by local artists, arty wrapping paper and gift certificates. Not surprisingly, gnomes and trolls love the place. Open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 521-2903.

YOUR CHANCE TO HELP

Want to brighten the holidays for a hundred homeless keiki and their families? The Christmas Wish Program is throwing a party for them but needs sponsors to help with the dinner, crafts, games, gifts, personal-hygiene goody bags and snack bags. The event happens Dec. 22, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the O Lounge, 1349 Kapi'olani Blvd. To help out, contact Kaylene Oyama at 295-1936 or kaylene@hawaii.rr.com.

FINAL WORD

"Isn't it awful? We're back to puritanical times. So many people don't understand: We didn't necessarily drink because we had problems. We drank 'cause we adored it! We adored getting drunk!"

Christopher Plummer | actor, on the hard-drinking '60s, as quoted in Entertainment Weekly
