Volunteers are being sought to join the state Department of Forestry and Wildlife and the Kailua Urban Design Task Force to restore wetland habitat at Hamakua Marsh from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday off Hamakua Drive in Kailua.
The workday will include planting and clearing the waterway in the 22-acre wetland for the benefit of endangered or threatened species such as the gallinule ('alae 'ula), Hawaiian duck (koloa), Hawaiian stilts (ae'o) and coots ('alae ke 'oke 'o).
Volunteers should be prepared to work in muddy conditions and wear rubber boots, wet-suit booties or closed toe shoes. Bring gloves, sunblock, hat, rain gear, lunch/snacks and water.
The staging area is about a half-mile from the Hamakua Drive/Kailua Road intersection. Turn right after crossing the bridge and look for a gate and sign that says "Beware of Wild Cattle."
