After battling Kapolei to a stalemate for a half, Punahou's offense eventually proved too much to handle.

In the first-ever meeting between the teams, the Buffanblu blew past the Hurricanes for three touchdowns in the second half and won, 35-21, in a non-league game at Aloha Stadium yesterday.

Buffanblu quarterback Brett Kan picked apart Kapolei's secondary for 224 yards and three touchdowns, and when Kan wasn't on, Punahou utilized running back Ryan Nobriga for key first downs and another score.

The combination was too much for Kapolei's beleaguered defense.

"We unravelled pretty quick there in the second half," said Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez. "Defensively we just didn't get it done. We didn't stop the run up the middle, and had a lot of missed tackles, missed assignments."

Punahou went up 21-14 midway through the third quarter when Kan hit receiver Zac Yamagishi on a 16-yard touchdown pass.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Buffanblu had the ball first-and-10 at their 39-yard line, but a snap went over Kan's head and he fell on the ball for a 15-yard loss.

"I was just thinking, 'get the next play right, get the first down," ' Kan said.

Kan responded on the next play by connecting on a 76-yard touchdown pass to receiver Colin Viloria, who sprinted along the sideline and outran three defensive backs to the end zone with 10:53 left.

"(The errant snap) didn't really shake me that much, and I bounced back," Kan said. "We just kept rolling with our offense, and everything clicked."

The score put Punahou ahead 27-14, and what happened next put the game out of reach.

Two plays into Kapolei's next drive, Brad Padayao dropped back to pass and was intercepted by Dane Nishikawa, who returned it 23 yards for a score.

Padayao's first pass on the next drive was picked off again, this time by Steven Dannaway. The Buffanblu didn't score, but ran out most of the clock.

"Those (turnovers) are always going to kill you against a quality opponent like Punahou," Hernandez said. "They capitalized on our mistakes."

Padayao finished with two touchdown passes and 270 passing yards, including a late 50-yard scoring pass to Aaron Santiago.
