KIM LEADS QUALIFYING

Bev Kim of Honolulu shot a 7-over-par 80 at the 6,048-yard Honolulu Country Club layout yesterday to earn a berth in the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championships.

Also qualifying were Kula, Maui's Rose Pagan (83) and Honolulu's Lily Yao (84), who won a playoff with Kapolei's Michiko Kimura. Kailua's Kathy Ordway (92) is the second alternate.

The national tournament will be held at Rye, N.Y., Sept. 17 to 22.

TWO MISS CUT

Kurt Nino, a 2005 Damien High graduate, and Pierre-Henri Soero, a University of Hawai'i junior, failed to make the cut yesterday in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Philadelphia.

Nino shot 84—169 while Soero withdrew after opening with a 78. Those who made the 146 cut advanced to match play beginning today.

SAILING

UH COEDS NO. 1

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team is ranked No. 1 in Sailing World's preseason collegiate poll.

The Rainbows will be led by senior All-American Bryan Lake, who last spring became just the second skipper in dinghy nationals history to win the "A" division three times.

"There's a long way to go, but it's always an honor to be ranked No. 1," said Andy Johnson, who begins his 17th year as UH head coach. "The fact that USC is ranked second shows the national respect for our district."

The coed team and women's team, ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll, open the season Oct. 1.
