Llarenas, Gora capture tennis titles

The O'ahu All-Stars, who won the Cal Ripken World Series (ages 12-under) championship Sunday in Aberdeen, Md., returned to Hawai'i yesterday with their hardware. The All-Stars, under the guidance of manager Gerald Oda, defeated two-time defending champion Mexico, 1-0, in the final.

Top seeds Daniel Llarenas and Kalei Gora won age 18 division singles titles at the Hawai'i State Junior Tennis Championship on Sunday at Turtle Bay Resort.

Llarenas defeated fourth-seeded Kevin Tamura, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7, and Gora beat second-seeded Alexandra Welliver, 7-5, 6-0.

Llarenas also teamed with Keven Wong to win the boys 18 doubles title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Tamura and Riley Saito.

SURFING

LAU, MOORE DOMINATE

Ezekiel Lau of Honolulu and Carissa Moore of 'Aina Haina dominated the first contest of the Jamba Juice National Scholastic Surfing Association Hawaii Surf Series last weekend in 1- to 2-foot surf at Lahaina Harbor.

Lau, 11, won the Open Boys (12 and under), Explorer Boys (14 and under) and Explorer Menehune (12 and under) divisions. Moore, 12, won the Open Women (all ages) and Explorer Girls (14 and under).

Other standouts were Open Men's champion Chas Chidester of Sunset Beach, Explorer Men's champion Dusty Payne of Maui and Explorer Women's champion Coco Ho of Sunset Beach.


GOLF

CARLL LEADS MAUNA KEA

Kevin Carll of Ko Olina Golf Club shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Aloha Section PGA Mauna Kea Resort Stroke Play Championship at the Mauna Kea Golf Course.

Brian Sasada of Makena Golf Club is in second, with defending champion John Lynch of Kuki'o Golf and Beach Club third at even-par 72.

Rodney Acia of Hilo Muni leads the senior division by six strokes after a 73 and life member Ray DeMello leads the super senior division after a 77.

NINO OPENS WITH 85

Kurt Nino, a 2005 Damien High graduate, shot a 15-over-par 85 yesterday in the first round of stroke-play qualifying of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Philadelphia.

University of New Mexico junior Charlie Beljan leads the 312-man field after shooting a 6-under 64.


WHEELCHAIR TENNIS

KULA WOMAN NO. 12

Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler, of Kula, Maui, is one of five American women playing in the inaugural U.S. Open Wheelchair tournament, Sept. 8 to 11, at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Competition will feature 16 of the top wheelchair tennis athletes from around the world, playing in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, and women's doubles.

Arnoult-Ritthaler is ranked 12th in the world.
