Kim will play golf in Junior Solheim

Kimberly Kim of Pahoa has been named to the U.S. team that will compete in the third biennial PING Junior Solheim Cup, the American Junior Golf Association announced yesterday.
Kim, an incoming freshman at Waiakea High School, will join amateur standout Morgan Pressel on a team of 12 top junior golfers from the United States. They will play 12 top junior girls from Europe in the tournament that will held at The Bridgewater Club in Westfield, Ind., Sept. 5 to 7, the days leading up to The Solheim Cup at nearby Crooked Stick.
The U.S. team was selected based on a ranking system that awarded points for top tournament finishes. The top 10 girls were named to the team along with two captain's selections.
After qualifying for match play at this year's U.S. Junior Girls' Championship, Kim, at 13, the youngest player on the U.S. team, made it to the round of 16 before being defeated by eventual runner-up In-Bee Park. She won her first AJGA event last year as a 12-year-old at the I.R.I. Golf Group Sun Willows Junior (Pasco, Wash.), setting the record for the youngest player to win an AJGA Open event in the Association's history.
Kim tied for fourth at this year's PING Junior at The Woodlands and third at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship.
Also on the U.S. team are Jennie Arseneault, Lila Barton, Sydney Burlison, Esther Choe, Kimberly Donovan, Megan Grehan, Taylore Karle, Sydnee Michaels, Jane Rah and Catherina Wang.

MCLACHLIN IN SECOND
Parker McLachlin, a Punahou grad and 1996 state high school champion, fired an 8-under-par 64 yesterday and is two shots off the lead going into the final round of the Grey Goose Gateway Tour stop in Mesa, Ariz.
McLachlin had an eagle on the first hole at Alta Mesa Country Club and added six birdies in his bogey-free round.
Scott Harrington leads at 19-under 197.
JUNIORS EARN BERTHS
Dayna Bersamin, Robert Greenleaf, Miki Ueoka and Alex Nakao won their respective age divisions of the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Junior Tour Series yesterday at the Mauna Lani Golf Club.
Bersamin (girls 13-14) shot 81, Greenleaf (boys 13-14) 82, Ueoka (girls 15-18) 80 and Nakao (boys 15-18) 73 and won a playoff with Max Bonk at the par-72 North Course.
Bersamin, Greenleaf and Nakao, along with Ayaka Kaneko (girls 15-18), earned berths to the 2005 HSJGA Tournament of Championships by virtue of having the best 36-hole score of the two-day series. The championship event will be held at Wailea, Dec. 10 and 11.
VOLLEYBALL
HOST IOLANI ADVANCES
California powers Rim of the World and El Toro, and Hawai'i powers Iolani and Punahou advanced to the championship bracket of the Ann Kang Invitational Girls Volleyball Tournament yesterday at Iolani School.
Rim of the World and El Toro led their respective pools with 7-1 records, with Iolani and Punahou placing second with 6-2 records.
Punahou opens championship round play today at 6 p.m. against Los Alamitos, which went 8-0 in pool play. Consolation round matches start at 2:30 p.m.
TENNIS
STATE JUNIORS TODAY
The Hawai'i State Junior Open, for players 18 and under, begins today at Turtle Bay Resort. It is a designated tournament on the junior calendar with results being considered for end-of-year rankings in each age division.
Matches start at 7:30 a.m. today and tomorrow, and 8 a.m. Sunday, with finals scheduled through 2 p.m.
Top seeds are Daniel Llarenas and Kalei Gora (18s), Keven Wong and Brooke Doane (16s), Cainan Shinjo and Sherise Lum (14s), and William Chen and Ashley Nakaoka (12s).
