Retief Goosen qualified for the PGA of Grand Slam as an alternate, but said on Tuesday he was not planning to go to Kaua'i for the two-day exhibition, Nov. 22 and 23, at Po'ipu Bay Golf Course, according to an Associated Press story. No reason was given.

That would make Vijay Singh the next alternate. Singh would have been the first alternate until his bogey on the last hole of the PGA Championship.

Phil Mickelson, who won the PGA Championship on Monday, is the defending champion.

Tiger Woods, who won the Masters and British Open and Michael Campbell, winner of the U.S. Open, also are scheduled to play in the annual 36-hole event that pits the winners of golf's four major tournaments.

PRESIDENTS CUP

Fred Couples and Justin Leonard were chosen by captain Jack Nicklaus to complete the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup. The 10 players who qualified are Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, David Toms, Kenny Perry, Chris DiMarco, Jim Furyk, Fred Funk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III and Scott Verplank. Gary Player will captain the International team that includes Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Adam Scott, Angel Cabrera, Tim Clark, Michael Campbell, Stuart Appleby, Mike Weir, Nick O'Hern, Mark Hensby, Peter Lonard and Trevor Immelman. The Presidents Cup is Sept. 22 to 25 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in northern Virginia.
