Kono leads golf tourney in Germany

Punahou sophomore Stephanie Kono takes a two-shot lead into today's second round of the Harder German Junior Masters golf tournament. Kono shot a 3-under-par 70 yesterday in Heddesheim.
Kono is the only American in the elite girls' field of 33. She was invited to play in Germany, with all expenses paid, after winning the Westfield Junior PGA Championship.
German Andrea Wittek (72) was the only other girl to shoot under par.
Kono's only two bogeys came in the first five holes. She played the final 13 in 4-under.
The 54-hole tournament, which is in its third year, ends tomorrow.

JUNIORS TAKE TITLES
Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa and Ayaka Kaneko won the top age divisions of the King Auto Hawai'i State Junior Championships yesterday at The Club at Hokuli'a.
Fujikawa took the boys' 15-18 division by outlasting Sean Maekawa of Pa'auilo in a four-hole playoff after both finished at 2-over 146. Both birdied the first three playoff holes before Fujikawa clinched the title with a par.
Kaneko shot 75—157 to win the girls' 15-18 division.
Kristina Merkle of Honolulu won the girls' 13-14 division with 79—158, and Alika Bell of Kane'ohe won the boys' 13-14 division with 74—153.
WORLD GAMES
ROWE 13TH IN SWIM
Wailuku's Caleb Rowe, a 2001 Baldwin graduate, emerged from the B finals to take 13th in the 100-meter breaststroke Sunday at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey.
Rowe was an Academic All-American at Cal. He finished the 100 in 1:02.95. Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine won the gold in 1:00.73.
This is Rowe's first swimming meet overseas. "It's pretty incredible," Rowe said on the USOC Web site. "Everything is so different here, it's very exciting getting to experience this culture. Getting to represent the United States is a dream come true, so I'm having a blast."
Rowe will be in the 50 breastroke today, on the final day of swimming competition. Also today, Hawai'i's Stephanie Beckel will compete in taekwondo's featherweight division. Beckel won a bronze medal at the 2003 World University Games.
The men's volleyball team, with Kane'ohe's Brian Zodrow, finished fourth in its pool at 2-3. It plays Korea today in the consolation bracket. The Americans lost their final pool-play match to Slovakia, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19, with the U.S. middles combining for just six points.
Zodrow, an outside hitter, saw his first action since a brief appearance in the opener when he started the third game against Slovakia. He helped Team USA build its first lead of the game, 9-8, following one of his five kills. Slovakia tied the score four times before taking the lead for good at 13-12 on one of its 10 aces.
VOLLEYBALL
BERG SETS U.S. WOMEN
With Honolulu Olympian Lindsey Berg setting, the U.S. Women's National team improved to 2-0 in pool play at the FIVB Women's World Championship Qualification Tournament Monday in Puerto Rico by sweeping Mexico, 25-15, 25-16, 25-15.
Former Rainbow Wahine Therese Crawford is also on the U.S. team. Olympians, and former UH All-Americans, Robyn Ah Mow and Heather Bown are in Hawa'i, with Ah Mow rehabilitating her knee and Bown finishing her degree.
The five-team tournament serves as a qualifier for next year's World Championships. The top three advance.
Team USA swept Barbados in its opener, allowing 33 points.
The Americans conclude pool play against Canada and Puerto Rico. The top four teams at the conclusion of pool play advance to tomorrow's semifinals.
