City refuse crews were at work this morning clearing trash from Farrington Highway and Keaau Beach Park.
The city workers were joined by crews from Henkels & McCoy, which provided two dump trucks, two back hoes and a flatbed truck to help clear a massive pile of rubbish.
The so-called wall of trash resulted from cleanup efforts along a mile-long stretch of Farrington near Keaau Beach Park.
On Feb. 13, about 200 volunteers fanned out in the area of Farrington called the “wild west” and collected tires, mattresses, furniture and appliances.
Organizers figured 700 garbage bags and two 20-foot containers would be enough to accomodate the refuse.
Instead, that only took care of about a fourth of the debris hauled from the brush. With no place to put the excess, volunteers stacked the trash along the highway.
On Tuesday, about 50 volunteers removed an estimated one-third of a ton of the trash.
And this morning, the city and Henkels & McCoy finished the work.
