St. Ann's school 7th-grader a winner, with 'vengeance'

Maria Mesina of St. Ann's Model School in Käne'ohe spelled "vengeance" correctly in the final round last night to win the Windward District Spelling Bee.
Mesina and runner-up Jordan Kauwe of Windward Nazarene Academy advance to the state spelling bee, March 14 at Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College.
The state champion will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, June 2 to 4 in Washington, D.C.
Mesina, a seventh-grader, won in the seventh round. She topped a field of 12 contestants at the Le Jardin Academy auditorium. She is the daughter of Semuel and Bernadette Granadosin.

Kaua'i: Athena Abadilla (winner), St. Theresa School; Harmony Graziano, Kapa'a Middle School.
Central: Tomorrow, 6 p.m., Mililani Middle School.
Maui: Tomorrow, 6 p.m., 'Iao Intermediate School.
Leeward: Feb. 19, 6:30 p.m., Lanakila Baptist High School.
Honolulu: Feb. 27, 2 p.m., Sacred Hearts Aacdemy.
Big Island: Feb. 27, Hawai'i Preparatory Academy.
