Head-on collision in Maalaea kills 24-year-old Lahaina woman

Maui News

MAALAEA — A 24-year-old Lahaina woman died Sunday night after the Honda Accord she was driving crossed the centerline along North Kihei Road and collided head-on with an oncoming truck in Maalaea, police said.

Elitisi Tuivailala died at the scene, police said. One of the occupants in her vehicle was in critical condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center, while another was treated and released.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 33-year-old Lahaina man, was transported to The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu in stable condition for surgery that couldn't be done at Maui Memorial, police said.
The other five occupants of the truck were treated and released. All passengers were in the truck's extended cab, police said.
Police cited alcohol as being a factor in the crash. The investigation was ongoing.
The crash occurred around 10:26 p.m., as the black four-door Honda was traveling eastbound on North Kihei Road when it crossed the centerline and crashed into the Ford F150 truck that was traveling west.
The incident occurred about 1.1 miles east of Honoapiilani Highway.
This is Maui County's 13th traffic fatality so far this year, compared with 14 at the same time last year.
