McCully Street closed briefly because of early-morning blaze at bar
Advertiser Staff
The third fire in as many days at a food-and-beverage establishment caused McCully Street to be closed in both directions early this morning.
Firefighters responded at 2:24 a.m. to a fire at Chiko’s Tavern at 930 McCully.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said in an email that the blaze — confined to a portion of the lounge area of Chiko’s — was under control at 2:47 and extinguished at 2:55.
About 40 firefighters fought the two-alarm fire with five engines, two ladder trucks, one rescue company and a battalion chief.
Chiko’s Tavern is in a two-story commercial building on the corner of McCully and Algaroba streets. The bar was closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire.
The fire caused moderate to heavy damage to the lounge.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The blaze follows kitchen fires at I Love Country Cafe on Piikoi Street yesterday and Denny's on Kuhio Avenue on Monday. Fire investigators have ruled both accidental.
