UPW workers will be at schools even if classes canceled on 'furlough Friday'
Some 2,280 United Public Workers employees will report to work tomorrow at public schools, even though classes will be canceled for the first “furlough Friday.”
The UPW members at schools include cafeteria workers, custodians, electricians, masons and other general laborers.
Sandy Goya, spokeswoman for the state Education Department, said the workers are being given instructions today on what they should be doing tomorrow.
“They will receive assignments from their principals,” she said.
The UPW workers are not affected by the Hawaii State Teachers Association agreement, which will shut schools down for 17 Fridays starting tomorrow.
