Making decision to put God first
By Russell Stephen Pang

In Genesis 22, Abraham is ready to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac, when God reveals himself as Jehovah-Jireh, the god who provides.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus teaches that if we earnestly "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness," God will address our needs described in previous verses — material needs that cause us daily worry, anxiety and stress.
Is Jesus implying that if we put God first, God will be our Jehovah-Jireh?
As we ponder Matthew 6:33, our mind can't help but wonder.
Is this verse still valid advice in everyday 21st century life?
Should we renew our thinking, change our attitude, readjust our priorities? While we want to agree with Jesus, is it practical to live this verse?
Yet, why would Jesus tell his disciples to do something they couldn't do?
What will be the cost for us? What will we need to give up?
The lust of the flesh?
The lust of the eyes?
The pride of life?
The cares of this world?
The deceitfulness of riches?
Will we seriously detach from the material things we believe bring us joy, pleasure, satisfaction — our houses, cars, club memberships, wealth, jewelry, clothes and such?
What about nonmaterial things such as our status, titles, degrees, egos, addictions, etc.?
How about our relationships?
Will we place God first and foremost above all other relationships — our spouse, lover, children, parents, good friends, pets?
Yes, even above "me, myself and I."
Will we accept Jesus' command to "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness"?
Will we spiritually, mentally and emotionally allow God to be the hub of our life?
Will we surrender all within us so God will have first place?
Will we emulate Jesus and live to please God?
Will we deny ourselves?
Or will self-desires trump rational thought?
Joshua said it well: "As for me and my house, we will serve The Lord."
