Lahaina woman dies from injuries after crashing car

Advertiser Staff

A 31-year-old Maui woman died yesterday after she crashed her car Saturday night in Pä'ia, police said.

Gianna M. Mitchell of Lahaina was driving a 1996 Toyota Corolla when she crashed around 10:12 p.m. on Baldwin Avenue, two-tenths of a mile south of Holomua Road, police said.

Mitchell was alone when she lost control of the car, which then crossed the centerline, drove onto the left shoulder, collided with a dirt embankment and rolled onto its side, police said.

Mitchell was partially ejected and was pinned under the car, police said.

She was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and died.

Mitchell was not wearing a seatbelt and police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Her death is the 19th traffic fatality for Maui County this year, compared to 17 at the same time last year, police said.
