Solid-waste recycling event saves residents a long drive

Advertiser Staff

Hana residents are participating in a weeklong solid-waste recycling event as a part of the 2009 Great American Cleanup.

Washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters, ovens, microwaves, propane tanks, scrap metal, tires, batteries, televisions, computers and anything that plugs into a television or computer are being accepted and will be properly disposed of at recycling facilities. The items are no longer accepted at the Hana Landfill, making it difficult for residents to haul them to recycling centers in Central Maui.

The Community Work Day Program has partnered with the county, Maui Tow & Transport, Maui Tire Recycling and SOS Metals Island Recycling for the event, which will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sunday. The Hotel Hana-Maui is providing a staging area for the collection on Hana Highway, across from the Old Hasegawa General Store.

All items must be brought to the collection site free of household trash. Vehicles, furniture and green waste will not be accepted.

For more information, reach Community Work Day at 877-2524 or cwdkhb@pixi.com.
