Helping bring basketball fever back to the island's most feverish football community, Kahuku senior Jray Galea'i led the Red Raiders to a perfect and thrilling O'ahu Interscholastic Association regular season.
For his efforts, he was named OIA Red Conference Eastern Division Player of the Year after a recent vote of league coaches.
Galea'i, a 6-foot guard, was an explosive force in the open court who also could pull up and drain the 3-pointer or penetrate and dish to teammates.
He also contributed with rebounds, tough on-the-ball defense and leadership.
Galea'i is joined on the OIA Red East all-star first team by Kalaheo guard Aaron Fernandez, Kaimuki guard David Taulung, Moanalua forward Marcus Monroe and Kaimuki center Desmond Tautofi.
Fernandez, a 6-2 junior, was a dangerous 3-point threat who hit seven shots from beyond the arc and finished with 27 points in a victory over Kaimuki.
Taulung, a 5-8 senior, was an outstanding ball-handler and assist man. In an overtime loss at Kahuku, he scored 17 points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Monroe, a 6-4 junior, was an athletic scorer who could also drain the 3-pointer, sinking five in a 32-point explosion against McKinley.
Tautofi, a 6-2, 250-pound junior, was a powerful presence in the post but also had a nice shooting touch. He finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one block in a win over Kalaheo after sitting out the first period for disciplinary reasons.
Kahuku's Hiram Akina was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Red Raiders to the OIA Red East title in his first year at the helm.
