In a rare blowout of perennial power Mid-Pacific Institute on its home field, 'Iolani blasted five home runs and blanked the Owls, 14-0, yesterday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball action.

University of Hawai'i recruit Breland Almadova launched two shots over the center-field fence and had a game-high five RBIs as the Raiders took sole possession of first place in the ILH at 4-0. MPI fell to 3-1.

'Iolani banged out 21 hits in just five innings as the game was shortened due to the 10-run rule.

"We have a strong team this year and we really came together in the preseason," said Almadova, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior center fielder. "Our bats were on fire today, and it's a great win."

The fireworks began in the top of the second inning, when cleanup hitter Buen Hatanaka led off with an opposite-field home run to right. In the third inning, Almadova crushed a two-run shot that easily cleared the center-field fence 340 feet away to make it 3-0.

An inning later, Reyn Nagamine hit a towering blast over the fence in right, and Grant Iwamoto and Jensen Park later had run-scoring singles to push the lead to 6-0.

Nagamine, a two-time Advertiser All-State first baseman, had been struggling a bit at the plate and dropped from third to fifth in the lineup.

"It's been hard for him, because with his reputation he never sees good pitches," Raiders coach Dean Yonamine said. "He needed that (home run)."

The hits kept on coming in the eight-run fifth.

Jarrett Arakawa and Hatanaka led off with singles and advanced on a passed ball. Nagamine then brought Arakawa home on a sacrifice fly to right that nearly reached the fence, and Sean Nada walked.

Iwamoto then stroked a two-run single to center, and pinch hitter JR Bunda slammed a two-run homer over the right-field fence to make it 11-0.

After Kela Marciel was hit by a pitch, Park singled and Almadova followed with a line shot that just cleared the fence toward left-center.

"They're just good hitters, they have power all the way (through the lineup)," Owls coach Dunn Muramaru said. "We saw that in the preseason and I said, 'This is gonna be it ...' My worst fear came true."

But Yonamine said he cautioned his team not to read too much into the rare rout at MPI.

"Like I told them, we're not that good and (the Owls) are not that bad," Yonamine said. "This was just one of those days."
