Kailua dancer heads into another round

"So You Think You Can Dance" will be eliminating two more contestants this week and Kailua’s Kupono Aweau is hoping voters will keep him safe through another round.

After being in the bottom two dancers in last week’s elimination show, Aweau vowed to do better.

“I know they (the judges) don’t eliminate by couples, but I just felt that since she (Ashley) was going, I was going too,” said Aweau about his partner’s elimination. “They didn’t show it, but I was bawling on the side. I was shocked, she was shocked.”

With only a week until his next performance, he didn’t have time to dwell on his loss or near-elimination. To-do list in tow, Aweau two-stepped his way into a new routine and a new partner.

“My new partner is Kayla,” he said. “Surprisingly, we’re a match made in heaven. She’s a ridiculously amazing dancer and with Kayla, we complement each other, so it’s a great partnership.”

After expressing a little nervousness about having a new partner and a having to learn a new routine, he said, “after we practiced more and more, everything started falling into place.”

On top of learning a new routine Aweau has created a new solo, keeping in mind the judges’ comments and criticisms.

“If I land in the bottom three, which I pray pray pray that I won’t, I created a solo that will have more substance in it so they (the judges) will appreciate it,” said Aweau. “The show is about progress, so I’m hoping I can show it.”

And he has, through implementing the judges’ criticisms (like having to cut his hair) week after week. But is that enough to keep him around?

Aweau took last week’s criticisms and added them to his list of things to do.

So what else is on his list of things to do today?

“I have to hug four people today and I’ve already hugged three, and I have to remember to grab some keys for the director.”

But the first thing on Aweau’s list:

“Refocus myself. I’m going through a rut right now, I don’t know why and I feel like I’m not pushing myself as much as I can. I don’t know what’s going on with me. But the more support and positive energy I can have sent my way... The better,” he said in a final statement.

Hawaii, it’s up to you. You got the news straight from the man himself. He needs more support. He needs to feel the Hawaiian aloha in Hollywood.

"So You Think You Can Dance" airs on Fox Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and voting lines open immediately after. The elimination show takes place the following day, Thursdays, at 8 p.m.
