LIHUE — Cell phone technology helped Kauai firefighters rescue a lost hunter in Kokee on Saturday.
A 71-year-old Wailua man called 911 on his cell phone to report he was lost.
Through the county’s Enhanced 911 system, police dispatch was able to immediately locate the call on a large scale map and report the latitude and longitude of the man to firefighters from the Waimea station.
Using the coordinates, firefighters found the hunter at the end of Polihale Ridge Road at around midnight.
“Thanks to the advancements made in technology with the E911 system, police dispatch and our firefighters were able to quickly respond to a person in distress,” said Kauai Fire Chief Robert Westerman.
The Enhanced 911 system was put into place on Kauai in 2007.
