Thrilling "Red Raider Nation" in the community's two most high-profile sports, Kahuku's Jray Galea'i fueled football and basketball fever on the North Shore this past school year.
In football, Galea'i switched from quarterback to cornerback as a senior, leading an exciting play-making defense that helped the Red Raiders win the OIA championship.
He was named to The Advertiser's All-State first team and was a starter in the inaugural Hawai'i/Polynesia vs. Mainland Bowl, pitting players with Hawai'i/Polynesia ties against an elite all-star squad from the Mainland.
In basketball, Galea'i was the undisputed leader of a Kahuku team that went 12-0 in the regular season, won the OIA championship and reached the state title game. He was named OIA Eastern Division Player of the Year, Honolulu Star-Bulletin State Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-State by The Advertiser.
In the classroom, Galea'i maintained a 3.5 grade-point average and never received a grade lower than a "B." He was a volunteer coach for NFL Pro Bowl clinics at Kahuku and Ka'a'awa Elementary Schools and helped with other youth sports activities.
Galea'i also helped storm victims move furniture and clean up mud and debris from their homes after heavy rains ravaged North Shore communities last December.
He will attend Brigham Young University on a football scholarship this fall and plans to fulfill a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after his freshman year.
