NFL: Vikings cornerback Winfield continues to stay away

By DAVE CAMPBELL
AP Sports Writer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield is not participating in the team’s offseason practices this week as negotiations on a contract extension have stalled.

The Pro Bowl player missed a mandatory minicamp last weekend to attend the funeral of a friend’s mother.
Coach Brad Childress said on Thursday that he spoke with Winfield two days ago after the cornerback’s required physical exam. Childress declined to speculate on why Winfield has decided to stay away from the team this week. Winfield had been participating in the offseason strength and conditioning program until talks broke off.
Though only minicamps are contractually required for players during the offseason, other activities are optional in name only and strongly encouraged by coaches.
