UH regents plan to decide next week on search for new university president

The University of Hawaii Board of Regents will likely make a decision on the search for a new president next week, UH officials said today.

The board convened this morning to discuss the current presidential search. Only eight of the 15 regents were present at Bachman Hall on the UH-Mänoa campus, and they immediately went into executive session.
After several hours of closed-door discussion, the regents emerged and chairman Al Landon said the board will reconvene at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The regents are likely to make a decision at that time, he said.
The regents are faced with the decision to either hire the lone remaining candidate at the recommendation of UH’s Advisory Presidential Selection Committee or to adjust the search process, Landon said earlier this morning.
M.R.C. Greenwood, a former provost of the University of California system whose administrative career ended amid an ethics investigation, is the sole candidate after the other finalist withdrew his name from consideration. A third finalist, whose name was never released, withdrew last month.
UH President David McClain’s contract expires July 31, and he has made it clear he has no intention of remaining in the position.
