Fire officials last night were looking into what caused smoke to billow out of a Hawaiian Electric Co. substation on Kapi'olani Boulevard.

The smoke set off alarms at HECO's Kamoku substation at the corner of Kapi'olani and Date Street about 9 p.m. Firefighters at the scene discovered thick smoke, but saw no flames.

At about 10 p.m., fire spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said there was no indication as to what was causing the smoke. He said it didn't appear as though the structure was in danger.

HECO spokesman Darren Pai said power was transferred to other circuits and that there were no reports of outages. Once firefighters cleared the building, HECO officials would assess the damage and begin their investigation, he said.

Multiple fire companies were sent to the facility.

MAUI EXHIBIT PUTS FOCUS ON OUR FOOD

The Smithsonian traveling art exhibition "Key Ingredients: America by Food" will be on display at Maui Community College from Feb. 14 through April 11.

The exhibition explores the connections between Americans and the foods they produce, prepare and present at the table, according to a news release.

Through a selection of artifacts, photographs and illustrations, "Key Ingredients" examines the evolution of the American kitchen and how food industries have responded to technological innovations that have resulted in ever-growing variety of processed and fresh foods.

An interactive Web site, www.keyingredients.org, invites people to share family recipes and food stories, learn about food traditions and identify favorite small-town eateries.

The free exhibit will be in the lobby of the Ka'a'ike building.
