Golf: Montgomerie picked as Europe Ryder Cup captain

Associated Press

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Colin Montgomerie has been selected to be captain of Europe's team for next year's Ryder Cup in Wales.

Montgomerie, who will be 47 when the competition starts, will be Europe's youngest ever captain when the tournament is held in September 2010 at Celtic Manor.

The United States has already chosen Corey Pavin as its captain. He will be two months shy of his 51st birthday at the time of the competition.

Montgomerie, a Scot who has earned 23½ points in his Ryder Cup career, is the second most successful European player behind Nick Faldo with a record of 20 wins, 9 losses and 7 halves.
