INDIANAPOLIS — Carmel's girls swim team has set a girls national high school record by winning its 23rd consecutive Indiana state championship.

With its win in the Indiana High School Athletic Association state finals yesterday in Indianapolis, the Greyhounds surpassed the Punahou School girls swim team and its 22 straight titles from 1974-95, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Carmel took first place in eight of yesterday's 12 events and set national records in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.75) and 200 medley relay (1:41.68). The Greyhounds finished with an IHSAA record 427 team points.

The Greyhounds, who have the longest active winning streak in the nation regardless of gender, can now shift their attention to the overall national record for high school sports. The Punahou boys swim team won 29 consecutive championships from 1958-86.

Punahou won yesterday's girls state title while 'Iolani won the boys title.
