WAILUKU
Grant goes to sprinkler upgrades at care home

Gov. Linda Lingle has released a $750,000 capital improvement project grant to Hale Makua Health Services to equip its long-term-care facility in Wailuku with an updated water sprinkler system.

Hale Makua's 124-bed facility in Wailuku was built in 1966, when automatic sprinkler systems were not required. This project will equip the one-story building with a sprinkler system that meets state and federal requirements for long-term-care homes.

The total project cost is estimated at $791,860, which includes $41,860 raised by Hale Makua.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July. The first phase of construction that will connect the facility to the county waterline is scheduled to be completed in April 2010. The sprinkler installation is scheduled to be completed in April 2011.
