Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Hawaii Opera Theatre are collaborating for a holiday production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on Saturdays today through Dec. 19.
One of the most popular English operas, the production offers a lesson in giving and charity through a story about a poor child, who along with his mother, is awakened by three kings following a star to bestow gifts of gold, incense and myrrh on a newborn child. Amahl's mother is caught trying to steal gold, and in remorse tells the kings she would like to give a gift to the child, as well, and Amahl offers up his most prized possession, the crutch he can't walk without until his act of charity miraculously cures him, so he is able to follow the kings to Bethlehem to thank the child himself.
Eric Johnson directs the cast, which includes Chandler Bridgman as Amahl, Megan Mount as his mother, Chad Williams as King Kaspar, Leslie "Buz" Tennent as King Melchior, Gerald Altwies as King Balthazar and Jordan Savusa as The Page.
Tickets are $16 general and $8 for children, college students with ID and seniors over age 60. Active-duty military receive one free child admission with each regularly priced adult ticket.
All performances will be held at Tenney Theatre at The Cathedral Church of St. Andrew. Call the HTY box office for reservations and information at 839-9885 or visit www.htyweb.org.
