MLB: Royals' Waechter set for shoulder surgery
Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Royals right-hander Doug Waechter will have shoulder surgery next week, ending an injury-plagued first season with the club.
Waechter pitched only 5 1-3 innings, allowing five runs and nine hits, and spent most of the season on the disabled list with a variety of injuries. He first went on the DL in April with a strained elbow, then injured his oblique while trying to come back.
Waechter finally returned to the Royals on Aug. 6, only to go back on the DL a week later because of a shoulder strain. He will have surgery Aug. 31 to repair a damaged labrum. No timetable was set for his return.
Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Waechter also played one season in Florida and four with Tampa Bay.
