The state's top two returning quarterbacks will face each other when Division I state runner-up Leilehua hosts Interscholastic League of Honolulu power Saint Louis Aug. 29 in the final weekend of high school football nonleague games.
Advertiser Offensive Co-Player of the Year Andrew Manley will lead the Mules against the Crusaders' Jeremy Higgins, the state's most efficient passer last season. Manley shared first-team all-state honors with Punahou's Cayman Shutter, while Higgins was a second-team selection. Manley led the state with 3,642 passing yards, 314 completions and 31 touchdown passes, while Higgins owned the best passing efficiency rating at 178.6.
The game between the perennial contenders of their respective leagues is one of the more intriguing matchups of the nonleague schedule, which starts Aug. 14.
The Crusaders have one of the more challenging nonleague schedules in the state. They open Aug. 14 at Wai'anae. The Seariders also have a challenging nonleague schedule, as their other game is against Kamehameha Aug. 29 at Wai'anae.
Defending Division I state champion Punahou will play defending OIA Red champion Kahuku Aug. 22 at Aloha Stadium. The Buffanblu's other nonleague game is Aug. 28 at Mililani.
Also, while most of the nonleague games between OIA teams usually are Division I against Division II, Campbell will host Farrington Aug. 14 in an all-Division I matchup. The Sabers, the defending White champions, requested a move up to the Red West before the two-year evaluation period. Pearl City, which earned promotion to the Red last season, volunteered to move back to the White. The Chargers were 0-6 in the Red West last year and 0-8 overall. Pearl City athletic director Reid Shigemasa said the school administration requested the change because of last year's record and the coaching change. Waipahu graduate Kai Kamaka replaced Mel Bicoy as coach during the offseason. The division switch was made before Kamaka was hired.
The annual Father Bray Classic at Aloha Stadium is set for Aug. 15. Kaimuki will play Pac-Five at 4:45 p.m. and host 'Iolani will play Kaiser at 7:30 p.m.
Several OIA schools have facilities issues. Kahuku is installing new lights, so it will play visiting Kealakehe of the Big Island at Castle on Aug. 15. Also, although Kapolei is still completing work on bleachers on the visitor's side of the field, it will still host Kamehameha-Hawai'i on Aug. 15. Kahuku's and Kapolei's regular season games are still scheduled at their sites pending further notice, OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka said.
There are some changes in league scheduling around the state. The Maui Interscholastic League, which is reduced to five teams with the withdrawal of St. Anthony, has increased its regular season schedule from seven to eight games since each team plays each other twice. On the Big Island, each Division I team will play each other twice, but unlike last year, there is only one round. Same goes for Division II. The BIIF left a weekend open in case a playoff is needed.
