KAILUA — With its biggest bat back in the lineup, Kailua scored eight runs in the first inning and pounded out 18 hits in 5 2/3 innings yesterday to rout Campbell, 16-6, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball semifinal action.

The Surfriders, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 11-3 in league play and will face No. 1 Pearl City (14-0) for the championship at 5 p.m. Monday at Hans L'Orange Park.

The game will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Kailua suffered a scare during batting practice Tuesday, when No. 3 hitter Kale Sumner was struck in the head by a pitch. He was diagnosed with a mild concussion and sat out Wednesday's quarterfinal victory over Mililani before being cleared to play Thursday afternoon.

Sumner's vision obviously was sharp at the plate yesterday, as he went 4 for 5 with a double, home run and four runs batted in. His only out was a 300-foot fly ball to straight center field.

"He put a concussion on the ball today," said Campbell coach Rory Pico.

The Surfriders wasted no time getting started on offense, as Kory Sasaoka led off with a walk in the bottom of the first inning and Sumner had a one-out single to left field, setting the table for Reyn Matsuki's two-run triple to left.

Ryan McMonigle followed with a single to right, scoring Matsuki to make it 3-0. After a single by Alika Ramseyer-Ho, Keoki Reis-Moniz brought home McMonigle with a single to left and Elia Lono loaded the bases with a bunt single.

Back-to-back walks to Alan Baldwin and Sasaoka scored two more runs, making it 6-0, and Sumner added a two-run double to center to push the lead to 8-0.

"It feels like we're coming together as a team," said Sumner. "It's about trusting the guy behind you to do the job."

Keanu Kapana's two-run double to left cut the lead to 8-2 in the third, but Sumner answered with a two-run homer over the fence in right-center to make it 10-2.
