New Mexico State routs Rainbows, 16-6

New Mexico State crushed seven home runs, four in the eighth inning, to crush No. 20 Hawai'i, 16-6, in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader that ended with two outs in the bottom of the eighth because of the 10-run differential mercy rule today at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, N.M.
The second game was scheduled to go seven innings, but by WAC rules, if the opener is shortened by the 10-run rule, the second game will go nine innings.
Jeffrey Farnham hit two home runs, a lead-off one in the eighth and a three-run shot to end the game in the same innings that capped an eight-run inning. Nate Shaver also hit two homers.
Kevin Macdonald hit a grand slam for the Rainbows for his 10th homer of the season for UH.
Jared Jordan (6-1) allowed four runs, eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for the Aggies (33-9 overall, 8-6 WAC).
Matt Sisto (4-4) gave up seven runs (six earned), eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings for the Rainbows (25-15, 8-5).
The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Leo Aguirre doubled with one out and an out later, Wade Reynoso homered to center.
The Aggies added a run in the third. Nate Shaver singled with two outs and took third on Mike Sodders' single to left. Bryan Marquez walked to load the bases to set up Aguirre's walk that force in a run that made it 3-0.
New Mexico State added four in the fourth. Chase Perkins reached first on third baseman Vinnie Catricala's fielding error and Justin Lucero was hit by a pitch. Jeffrey Farnham's RBI single to right moved Lucero to third. Shaver homered to right to make it 7-0.
Shaver's solo home run off Harrison Kuroda in the sixth made it 8-0.
The Rainbows finally got on the board in the seventh. Jeffrey Van Doornum led off with a single to right, but was forced at second when Ryan Morford reached on a fielder's choice grounder to short. Morford took second on Greg Garcia's flare single to center. Sean Montplaisir's RBI single to right sent Garcia to third and pulled UH to 8-1. Catricala walked to load the bases. Jordan was pulled for Scott Coffman, who was greeted with a grand slam by Kevin Macdonald to pull UH to 8-5. Kolten Wong grounded out to first.
Van Doornum's one out solo home run to right off Jake Wilson in the eighth pulled UH to 8-6.
The Aggies sent 10 batters to the plate in an eight-run eighth against Kuroda. Farnham homered to left-center to lead off the bottom of the eighth to increase NMSU's lead to 9-6. Sodders singled and Marquez homered to center to make it 11-6. Aguirre singled and Harty homered to make it 13-6. Kyle Decater and Lucero singled back-to-back before Farnham ended the game with on the 10-run rule with a three-run home run to make it 16-6.
