Banquet honors service group
The American Friends Service Committee will celebrate 40 years in Hawai'i with a benefit banquet at 5 tonight at Kapi'olani Community College.
Honorees are Hawai'i founding committee member Robert Aitken, Dr. Fred Dodge of Malama Makua, and Hawaiian charter school advocates Noelani Goodyear-Ka'opua and Keola Nakanishi.
The service committee was founded by Quakers in 1917 as a way to help conscientious objectors. In Hawai'i, its history is illustrious: Established a few days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor by the local Quaker meeting, members worked to alleviate the hardship caused by the government's reaction against the local Japanese, according to information provided by Kyle Kajihiro, current AFSC Hawaii program director. PEACE DAY EVENTS SLATED IN WAIPAHU
The Waipahu United Church of Christ will celebrate Peace Day with a worship service, potluck lunch and discussion on peace, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sept 21.
The Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani, retired bishop of Honpa Hongwanji, will serve as guest speaker.

CHURCH CLASSES TACKLE PROSPERITY
Unity Church of Hawaii will host a series of seven classes on "The Prosperity Power Program," beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The series focuses on the integration of spiritual principles of prosperity with practical principles. It is taught by David Tasaka and Mindy Tucker.

HONGWANJI FOLLIES SET FOR SEPT. 21
The next Hongwanji Follies will feature a karaoke musical program with the Rev. Ryoso Toshima, Ronald Okura and Harold Date.
The follies, which will be at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 21, will be held at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin social hall, 1727 Pali Highway.
