KAHANA VALLEY — Despite issuing a 72-hour notice to get out, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources did not show up at Kahana Valley this morning to evict six families that have no permits or leases to live in Ahupua'a 'O Kahana State Park.

About 200 supporters of the six families from all over O'ahu and Neighbor Islands waived signs this morning and vowed to block entrance to the valley if DLNR agents appear.

Residents, schoolchildren, Hawaiian sovereignty groups and politicians showed up along Kamehameha Highway at the entrance to the valley.

Some carried signs such as "Save Our Home," "Stop Evictions" and "Humble Hawaiians Fighting For What's Right."

Passing motorists honked and waived back in support.

Representatives from the American Friends Service Committee, a social action group affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, said they defend human rights and came to show their support for the six families.

The state is using a "small technicality" to evict the families, said Kyle Kajihiro, Hawaii area program director for the American Friends Service Committee.

DLNR officials were unavailable for comment this morning.

Previously, they have said that a law that provided for long-term leases in the valley expired in 1993 and no new leases can be issued. Final notice was posted Wednesday.
