Colleges: Big Ten extends Delany

PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany agreed to a contract extension through June 2013.
Delany has led the Big Ten since July 1989. During that time, the Big Ten expanded to 11 members with the addition of Penn State in 1991. The conference was also a pioneer in the development of instant replay for college football and last year launched its own TV network.
University of Illinois chancellor Richard Herman said Delany has been successful in developing media-related resources that have helped the athletic programs at Big Ten schools and the thousands of student-athletes they serve.
Delany is the fifth Big Ten commissioner since the conference was founded in 1896. He played college basketball at North Carolina.
